Understanding Phuket's Climate

Phuket's tropical monsoon climate divides the year into two broad seasons. The dry season, locally called high season, runs from November through April and brings consistent sunshine, low humidity, and calm, clear seas. The wet season, often called the green season for its lush vegetation, spans May through October and is characterised by afternoon rain showers, warmer temperatures, and occasionally choppy west-coast seas.

The reality is more nuanced than "dry" and "wet" suggest. Even during the green season, mornings are typically sunny, and rain usually arrives as a dramatic but brief tropical downpour in the late afternoon before clearing to reveal spectacular sunsets. Many experienced Phuket visitors deliberately travel during the green season for its lower prices, empty beaches, and vibrant scenery.

Month by Month

January and February are considered the best overall months. Humidity is at its lowest, skies are reliably clear, and sea conditions are perfect for diving and snorkelling. These are peak-demand months, and the villa rate reflects this popularity. Book well in advance.

March and April remain dry but temperatures climb, making the pool particularly welcome. April sees the Songkran water festival, a uniquely Thai celebration. Villa rates begin to decrease in the second half of April as the season transitions.

May and June mark the start of the green season. Prices drop significantly, tourist numbers thin, and the island takes on a quieter character. Rain showers are intermittent, and many days remain largely sunny. This is the best period for budget-conscious travellers who don't mind occasional rain.

July and August see a minor uptick in visitors as European and Asian families travel during school holidays. Weather is variable but often includes long sunny stretches. Villa availability during these months is moderate, making it a reasonable window for family trips.

September and October are the quietest and wettest months. Rain is more frequent, and some west-coast beach activities are limited by surf conditions. However, the island's east coast remains calmer, and villa rates are at their lowest. This period suits travellers who prioritise value and solitude.

November transitions back to dry season. Rain decreases rapidly, and the island begins to green up with fresh vegetation. Loy Krathong, the festival of lights, typically falls in November and is a beautiful cultural experience. Villa rates are mid-range, offering excellent value with increasingly reliable weather.

December is the start of peak season, with Christmas and New Year driving the highest demand and rates. Weather is excellent: warm days, cool evenings, and clear skies. The minimum stay during the peak holiday weeks is seven nights.
